Celebrating Nigeria’s 56th independence

Dr. Yinka Tella The Nigerian American Foundation of South Florida will be celebrating Nigeria’s 56th independence anniversary from Saturday, September 24 through Friday, October 7, 2016. Highlight of the festivities will be the unveiling of African names for a number of prominent South Floridians including State Representative Daphne Campbell and the conferment of a chieftaincy title on Congresswoman Frederica Wilson at the “Green and White” Banquet and Awards Gala at the Betty T. Ferguson Center on October 1st.

The Nigerian History and Spelling Bee Competition taking place at Wolfson Center Lecture Hall 2151, Miami Dade College North Campus, on Saturday, September 24th, from 10am-2pm
Exhibition of Nigerian Arts, Artifacts and Lifestyle at the lobby of Stephen P. Clark Government Center in downtown Miami, from October 1st to the 7th: County Commission ceremony recognizing Nigeria at 12 noon on Wednesday, October 6th.
Nigerian-American Wellness and Culture Fest also featuring the Nigerian Independence Soccer Tournament, on Saturday, October 3, 2015 (10 am-2 pm) at Rolling Oaks Park, Miami Gardens, 18749 Northwest 17th Avenue Miami Gardens, FL 33056.
• The “Green and White” Banquet and Awards Night, a dress-to-impress, fundraising banquet, with the theme, Nigeria: Moving Onward, on Saturday, October 1, 2016 (7:00pm - 8:15pm: Cocktails; 8:30pm - 1:00am: Banquet and Awards) at Betty T. Ferguson Recreation Center, 3000 199th Street, Miami Gardens, FL 33169.

Apart from the October 1 banquet which is ticketed ($75, regular; $100 VIP), all other events are free. At the banquet, which will benefit NAF’s “Kill Malaria” and “Access to Clean Water” initiatives, in Africa, and the $100,000 “Kids of Promise” Scholarship Fund, we will recognize some of our community leaders with the NAF Heritage Awards. The banquet will feature a keynote address by Congresswoman Frederica Wilson and performances by prominent Nollywood artistes including Mr. Bayo Bankole of the “Boy Alinco” fame.
